This is a big day for Black women!
Harriet Tubman earned her place in history by escaping slavery, becoming an abolitionist and a Union spy.
And, as of today, Tubman will be the new face of the U.S. $20.
Actually, the redesigned bank note (we’re already calling them “Tubmans”) won’t debut until sometime after the year 2020, but that hasn’t stopped us from celebrating and wondering: what are some other American standards that should be rededicated to black female icons?
Here are a few:
1. The Dinah Washington Monument — Yes, George Washington is important, but the Queen of Blues needs a place to reign.
2. The Beyoncé of Liberty — “Give me your tired, your poor, your huddled masses yearning to slay bitch.”
3. Mount Fierce-More — Dedicated to the ones who killed it before us: Ruby Dee, Shirley Chisholm, Nina Simone, Sojourner Truth
In all seriousness, we couldn’t be prouder and here’s to seeing more people (women) of color woven into the fabric of this country’s heritage.
TELL US: What other Black women deserve more official recognition?
