If you’re an avid Instagrammer you’re very aware of Monica Brown‘s social media presence, or lack thereof the last two months. The 36-year-old singer revealed to her 5.3 million followers that her self-imposed break was due to a recent medical emergency that included removing a number of fibroids, cysts and a hernia.

“May 30th I had an almost 8 hour surgery to remove my endometriosis (which I didn’t know I had until two weeks prior) , 2 cysts, fibroids & a hernia that all were making me very sick.”

According to Azura Vascular Care, between 80 and 90 percent of African-American women will develop fibroids by age 50, in comparison to 70 percent of Caucasian women. The study also says that six factors that are attributed to higher risks in our community are hereditary, diet and obesity, the age a woman begins her menstrual cycle, using hair relaxers, vitamin D deficiency and drinking alcohol.

We’re just glad to see Mo happy and healthy again. Check out a few photos she shared (be sure to click the right arrow on the photo) while attending LL Cool J‘s oldest daughter’s wedding over the weekend.
