Audio has surfaced of Michael Slager, the former North Charleston police officer who killed Walter Scott, laughing about his “pumping adrenaline” just moments after the fatal shooting.
The audio was taken from Slager’s police dash cam after he shot the 50-year-old five times on April 4. Slager, who is also suspected of planting his Taser next to Scott’s body, is heard asking another officer about the next steps. The cop seems to be unfazed and relatively calm, as he laughs about his energy level after killing Scott. According to the Huffington Post,
“What happens next?” Slager asked in the recording captured by a patrol car dashcam.
The senior officer explained other cops would bring him back to the station, take his gun and then they’d send him home before asking any serious questions.
“Probably once they get you there, we’ll take you home,” the officer told Slager. “Take your crap off, take your vest off, kind of relax for two or three.”
“It’ll be real quick,” he said. “They’re gonna tell you you’re gonna be out for a couple of days and you’ll come back and they’ll interview you then. They’re not going to ask you any kind of questions right now. They’ll take your weapon and we’ll go from there. That’s pretty much it.”
You can listen to the audio below:
The dash cam initially caught footage of Slager pulling over Walter for a broken tail light. While the video didn’t capture the shooting, witness Feidin Santana recorded the moment of Scott’s death on his phone. Labeled a hero by the Scott family, Santana says Slager was in full control throughout the entire shooting, refuting Slager’s original argument that he feared for his life.
The South Carolina Law Enforcement Division hasn’t confirmed the audio’s authenticity yet, but says the voice heard in the recording is more than likely the officer.
A second witness named Gwen Nichols came forward on Thursday, claiming that there was a brief “tussle,” but mirrored Santana’s statements that Scott was not violent during the incident.
