Oscar Noms: Denzel’s In, Taraji’s Out

The Academy Awards ceremony may prove to be more “colorful” this year, especially after this morning’s Oscar nods to a few people and movies we love. The critically-acclaimed movie, Moonlight, is nominated for eight Oscars, including Best Picture along with our favorites, Hidden Figures and Fences. All three movies are also up for nominations in the Best Writing (Adapted Screenplay) category.

And it’s no surprise that Denzel Washington, received a nomination for Best Actor in a Leading Role in his portrayal of Troy Maxon in Fences. This is his eighth Academy Award nomination in this category. His cast mate Viola Davis — up for the NAACP Image Awards‘ Entertainer of the Year Award — also scored her third nomination for Best Actress in a Supporting Role, competing with actresses Naomie Harris (Moonlight) and Octavia Spencer (Hidden Figures).

Hey! And we’re happy Ruth Negga (Loving) and Mahershala Ali (Moonlight) got noms for Actor/Actress in a Supporting Role.

Even the Academy’s Best Documentary category recognized a few favorites, including I Am Not Your Negro, OJ: Made in America and 13th, written and directed by Ava DuVernay, who is already riding high on the success of  her TV show, Queen Sugar. Both 13th and I’m Not Your Negro are also up for NAACP Image Awards‘ Outstanding Documentary (Film) category.

Despite the great the news, we’d be remiss if we didn’t spill a little tea and shade for the people who deserved nominations, but got snubbed. Here’s our top five:
