University of Massachusetts at Boston (UMB)

Established in 1964, the University of Massachusetts at Boston is the second-largest institution in the UMass education system and it is led by J. Keith Motely, the university’s first African-American chancellor. UMB grants undergraduate and graduate degrees in various fields of study across its eight academic colleges and schools. Popular majors include Business, Criminal Justice and Health Sciences. UMB provides various activities and programs through hundreds of organizations to engage students. The Black Student Center sponsors events to broaden understanding of the accomplishments of African descendants across the diaspora and serves as a place to network with other students, alumni and faculty of color. There are also organizations serving African, Cape Verdean and Haitian communities specifically along with the H.I.P. H.O.P. Initiative dedicated to bringing Hip Hop back to its original positive roots. UMB builds leadership skills and lasting friendships while providing a vibrant teaching and learning environment. It is the school’s mission to encourage its students to succeed through scholarship, dedicated faculty and public service.
