According to reports, the warm gesture honors Trayvon’s parents–Tracy Martin and Sybrina Fulton— for their commitment to social justice since losing their son over five years ago. The degree also serves as a reminder of Trayvon’s life-long aspiration to become a pilot, a dream that was unfortunately taken away from him.
The support between the university and Trayvon’s family isn’t new. Currently, The Trayvon Martin foundation—a social justice organization dedicated to the end of senseless gun violence, mentoring, and education for women and minorities — co-founded by his parents, is based on the Florida Memorial University campus.
The degree will be awarded during the FMU annual spring commencement on May 13.
