Who is Toni Braxton Blaming for Her Failed Stardom?

The Paley Center for Media’s Annual Los Angeles Benefit – Inside

In “Girl, You Tried The Absolute Hell Out Of It” news, Toni Braxton revealed her feelings that Oprah Winfrey was partially responsible for the downward trajectory that her career took more than a decade ago. Toni is referring to her appearance on the Oprah’s now retired daytime show in which she discussed her first bankruptcy.

Feel free to insert a bevy of boos and hisses here. Now save your energy, because you’re gonna have to do a reload after reading the quote in full.

Here’s what The Most Famous Braxton said on her Behind The Music special:

She was so frickin’ mean to me. I was in shock. I couldn’t believe it ‘cause I loved her so much. I admired her and looked up to her and she pretty much reprimanded me. She says to me, ‘I heard you have Gucci flatware. I’m Oprah Winfrey and I don’t have Gucci flatware. You ain’t got Gucci flatware because you didn’t want to buy it, not because you couldn’t afford it! What do you mean? And immediately she made me feel this big. That moment completely changed my career. It made people look down on me.

I love Toni Braxton, but this absolutely delusional.

Toni Braxton killed her own career with trying too hard to be Shug Avery, young auntie in the club with her music after Secrets. When most of your initial success can be attributed to R&B ballads that simultaneously became staples on adult contemporary radio stations across the country, you should expect a bit of a dip in sales when you start sampling 2Pac and trying to dance.

And while the More Than A Woman and Libra albums overall were better than many realized, Toni’s sales started to dip with The Heat, which wasn’t particularly great. So yeah, maybe the bankruptcy didn’t help your public image, Toni, but it was the music that mattered most. Take for example your other LaFace label mates who went broke: TLC. They sure did sell a lot of copies of Fan Mail despite the bankruptcy that came after the hugely successful CrazySexyCool album.

Nice try, though.
