Here’s a pleasant surprise from an unlikely source: Lebron James’ production company SpringHill Entertainment is set to produce its first scripted television series about the life of Madam C.J. Walker.
To add to the surprise, none other than the award-winning Octavia Spencer is set to play the crowned “first female self-made millionaire.”
They might as well give Octavia Spencer her Emmy now!
According to Variety, the series will cover Madame C. J. Walker’s journey being an orphaned daughter of slaves, who was married at 14 and widowed at 20. Before building her beauty/ hair care empire she spent two decades as a washerwoman, earning a mere $1.50 a week.
James tells Variety:
“I am really proud of this project and that SpringHill will be partnering with Octavia to tell this important story,” James said. “Every American should all know the story of Madam C.J. Walker. She was an innovator, entrepreneur, social activist, and total game changer whose story has been left out of the history books. I hope this project lives up to her legacy with a story that will educate and inspire.”
