Ieshia Champs is going viral on the internet – and rightfully so! The single mother of five, who dreamed of becoming a lawyer since the age of seven, is graduating from Texas Southern University Law School in May. The Port Arthur, Texas native made it clear that she did not achieve this accomplishment on her own.
The 33-year old tells USA Today that the her children’s support made this possible. She also credits her sister who pushed her to have a relationship with God and go to church after suffering the loss of a job, the loss of her children’s father to cancer, and the loss of everything she owned in a house fire. On the verge of giving up and even contemplating suicide, she met a minister who encouraged her to earn her GED, so that she could become the lawyer she dreamed of being.
“I never told her I wanted to be a lawyer,” Champs said to the outlet. “If God can take a little girl like me who had nothing and put me in a position to where I’m graduating from a wonderful law school in the top 15% of my class Magna Cum Laude with five children, he can do anything for you.”
Check out her photo shoot below that nearly broke the internet!
Just last year, Lesley McSpadden, the mother of Michael Brown – the unarmed teen fatally shot by Ferguson police in 2014 – received her high school diploma. In the midst of all the heartbreak and loss they suffered, both mothers pushed through and achieved their dreams. We’re so inspired by this #BlackExcellence!
