Diva Database: Whitney Houston

2011 Pre-GRAMMY Gala And Salute To Industry Icons Honoring David Geffen – Show

Whitney Houston was destined to be the greatest pop diva ever. The daughter of gospel talent, Cissy Houston; the cousin of superstar singer, Dionne Warwick; and goddaughter of the Queen of Soul, Aretha Franklin, her pop music supremacy was ordained. Her first four albums sold 86 million copies around the world. She was the first artist to have seven consecutive number 1 hits and her cover of Dolly Parton’s “I Will Always Love You” dominated the charts for a record14 weeks straight.  The soundtrack from “The Bodyguard” is still the best-selling movie soundtrack of all time. Her movie roles in “The Bodyguard,” “The Preacher’s Wife” and “Waiting to Exhale” proved that Whitney was just as much a movie star as she was a pop star. In fact, after a drama-filled marriage to Bobby Brown, Whitney was making her comeback with the movie, “Sparkle,” before her untimely death. Lucky for us this legendary diva will live on in her music.
