We all knew Rashon Nelson and Donte Robinson were going to apply pressure to Starbucks after being arrested last month at their neighborhood coffee shop for not ordering anything, but the settlement with the city, while inspiring, is something we didn’t expect.

The pair settled for $1 each and a promise from Philadelphia officials to fund a $200K entrepreneur program for young people.  They also chose not to pursue a lawsuit against the city.

“This was an incident that evoked a lot of pain in our city, pain that would’ve resurfaced over and over again in protracted litigation, which presents significant legal risks and high financial and emotional costs for everyone involved,” Mayor Jim Kenney said.

Now while Nelson and Robinson won’t receive a large compensation from the city of Brotherly Love, Starbucks has reportedly agreed to pay the two men, keeping the amount undisclosed.

Since the arrest, Starbucks CEO Kevin Johnson came to Philadelphia to personally apologize and announced 8,000 stores would close May 29 for racial bias training.
