Color us surprised. And somewhat grossed out. And now insert relief. Earlier this week an inaccurate source reported the iconic family-friendly song was about a woman’s time with a vibrator. Reportedly Neville Livingston, the writer behind The Electric Slide, said, “I’m surprised it took people this long to figure out.” Apparently, he wrote the song after a girlfriend told him she didn’t need him because she had a toy she nicknamed the “electric slide”.
But now Livingston is speaking out, denying the rumors. Let’s take a look at the lyrics below before we get to his statement.
I can’t believe how nasty they was! Who knew this was about a vibrator lol #ElectricSlide pic.twitter.com/jEOOTrIwsk

Hilarious! Now back to Livingston. The 71-year-old released a statement to EDM adamantly denying the rumors, “At no time have I ever lent credence to a rumor that the song was inspired by anything other than Eddie Grant’s Electric Avenue. To state otherwise is a falsehood and offends my legacy, the legacy of the singer Marcia Griffiths, and tarnishes the reputation of a song beloved by millions of fans the world over.”
Welp. That was a close one and admittedly fun while it lasted. Watch the original version below.
