Only two days after receiving the title of host for the 2019 Oscars, Kevin Hart has stepped down due to the resurfacing of homophobic tweets. The now-deleted tweets were from 2009-2011, and one, in particular, addressed how Hart would deal with his son if he grew up to be homosexual.
According to CNN, the tweet read: “Yo if my son comes home & try’s 2 play with my daughters doll house I’m going 2 break it over his head & say n my voice ‘stop that’s gay’.”
One of the biggest questions arising from the #KevinHart controversy is why did @Twitter ignore @KevinHart4real tweets below for violating its rules against hateful conduct but has banned far right activists/groups for their tweets of hatred toward minorities? #KevinHart#lgbtpic.twitter.com/yC4pY3E00W
The comedian took to social media after receiving a call from the Academy to express that he would not apologize for the tweets since he has done so in the past and didn’t feel the need to continue apologizing for it.
At the end of the video, the “Night School” actor and producer once again stated how grateful he was to the Academy for the opportunity to host, and said, “If it goes away, no harm, no foul.” Shortly after midnight, Kevin took to Twitter to apologize for his insensitivity and to announce that he’s stepping down as next year’s host.
I have made the choice to step down from hosting this year's Oscar's….this is because I do not want to be a distraction on a night that should be celebrated by so many amazing talented artists. I sincerely apologize to the LGBTQ community for my insensitive words from my past.
I'm sorry that I hurt people.. I am evolving and want to continue to do so. My goal is to bring people together not tear us apart. Much love & appreciation to the Academy. I hope we can meet again.
Now this means the Oscars is left without a host and the show is less than two months away. One name social media has been throwing around since Kevin stepped down, is his good friend Tiffany Haddish. Some people even suggested the “Nobody’s Fool” star co-host the award show with actress Maya Rudolph. Can you imagine Tiffany hosting the Oscars? Or even two female comedians of color hosting the show?
Tiffany Haddish would be great. Just pick her for the Oscars. She clearly digs these awards ceremonies & if anything goes wrong, at least it will be funny.
