Though originally created with HBO, Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom will be released on Netflix as part of a multi-film deal featuring Wilson’s works and will portray the life of The Mother Of Blues, Ma Rainey, whose real name is Gertrude Pridgett.
One of the playwrights most iconic pieces of work, the play premiered in the mid-’80s and ran for 276 performances. The original cast featured Theresa Merritt as the lead and John Carpenter, Charles S. Dutton, Leonard Jackson,Robert Judd, Christopher Loomis, Aleta Mitchell, and Joe Seneca.
