Ava DuVernay continues to manifest her best life! After her 2018 A Wrinkle in Time debut, DuVernay announced that she will direct another $100-million-plus budget film, the Warner Brothers & DC Comics film The New Gods. Since then, we hadn’t heard much more about the film until now.
After a fan reached out to the director for an update on the film, the Selma and A Wrinkle in Time director replied saying, “This surreal year has given us time to dig in even more. Enjoying going even deeper into the mind and musings of Jack Kirby with [Tom King].”

This isn’t the first big-budget film for the director. In March 2018, she debuted the film A Wrinkle in Time with a $100-million budget. The film came in number two behind another Black-directed film and mega-box office hit of that year, Black Panther ($200-million budget).

Per IndieWire, the film is based on the 1971 comic book series of the same name, created and designed by Jack Kirby. While DuVernay has not yet announced the cast of the film, she did allude to the possibility of featuring a cast member from her prior film When They See Us.
In each of my narrative projects since my first film entitled I WILL FOLLOW, I bring over an actor from the last project I made. So, yes, there is a 99.9% chance this will happen again. https://t.co/BGNvouyNDJ
DuVernay has not yet announced a release date but her co-writer, King, revealed that he and DuVernay are about to start scripting the film. Per IndieWire, with other DC Comic films lined up through 2022, the earliest The New Gods could hit theaters would be in 2022.
Congratulations Ava DuVernay and keep creating #BlackGirlMagic!
