Director: Albert Magnoli
Cast: Prince, Apollonia Kotero, Morris Day, Olga Karlatos, Clarence Williams III
Why It Deserves Your Vote: In 1984, there were exactly two pop stars in the world – Michael Jackson and his bizarro electro-funk-sex twin Prince. The film is a pseudo-biography of the Midwest superstar, chronicling his dangerous home life, his bruising ego and troubled relationship with his girlfriend. No one would argue that the cast is filled top notch actors (in fact, they are mostly his real-life band members) but Prince shows real charisma on-screen. And naturally, there is the music which went on to win Grammys and an Oscar. It may not be the strongest film on the list but it is essential to the last thirty years of black film.
